This reduces a person’s viral load and lessens the severity of their symptoms. Paxlovid can reduce the risk of hospitalization by 89%, as demonstrated in one clinical trial. Paxlovid is effective against the Omicron variant of Covid-19 when taken within five days of the start of symptoms.

Is molnupiravir FDA approved?

FDA has issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Merck’s molnupiravir for the treatment of mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in adults with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and who are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death, and for whom alternative COVID-19 treatment options authorized by the FDA are not accessible or clinically appropriate. Molnupiravir is available by prescription only and should be initiated as soon as possible after diagnosis of COVID-19 and within five days of symptom onset.

Is molnupiravir safe?

One stage 2 clinical trial found that molnupiravir is both effective and well-tolerated, meaning that there were few reported side effects. Fewer than 50% of study participants reported side effects in one study. The same study found that of these reports, 93% of side effects were mild.

Are there any FDA-approved pills for COVID-19?

Yes. The FDA authorized Pfizer’s COVID treatment pill (Paxlovid) and Merck’s COVID treatment pill in December 2021.

Can people who have been vaccinated get the COVID-19 pill?
