Home Nasal Swab Test for COVID-19

What Is A Home Nasal Swab COVID-19 Test?

An at-home nasal swab for COVID-19 looks for an active infection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. During this test, a clinician uses a nasal swab to collect a sample from the inside of your nose. Unlike point-of-care tests, this test requires the sample to be sent to a lab with results generally available within 3 business days.

How does a home nasal swab for COVID-19 work?

Our in-home service is NOT a DIY test kit. One of our nurses comes to your home to administer the test and gather a nasal swab sample from the inside of your nose. After your appointment, our nurse will send the sample to a lab for processing.

How expensive is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing costs vary depending on your state and testing center of choice. We recommend that you check with your local testing center to find out how much their nasal swab test costs.

Does insurance cover testing?

Yes, insurance does cover most COVID-19 testing. We recommend that you check with your insurance provider for details about deductibles and other fees.

What Do Test Sensitivity And Specificity Mean?

Test sensitivity and test specificity refer to the spectrum that a medical test uses to determine whether an individual is considered ‘sick’ or ‘healthy’. This spectrum is designed to have a threshold that is low enough to exclude healthy people and high enough that it includes sick people.

  • Test sensitivity: The proportion of sick people who the test identifies correctly.
  • Test specificity: The proportion of healthy people that the test correctly identifies.

Tests with low sensitivity and/or specificity are more likely to give incorrect results such as false positives and false negatives. Tests with high sensitivity are less likely to give these incorrect results.

False positives can lead to additional costs, tests, and fear. False negatives, on the other hand, may lead you to not seek further treatment since you do not think you are sick. In addition, false negatives can cause an unintentional spread of the virus. That’s why getting a test with high sensitivity and specificity is important.

Concierge MD uses a nasal swab test with high specificity and sensitivity to provide you with results that are as accurate as possible for your peace of mind.

What are false positive and false negative results?

  • False positive: The person tests positive even though they are not sick. False positives can sometimes occur if a person is sick with a coronavirus strain other than SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).
  • False negative: Even though the test comes back negative, the person is actually sick.
