The DUTCH Adrenal test measures free cortisol, cortisone, and their metabolites throughout the day using dried urine samples. This provides a detailed view of your adrenal function, stress response, and diurnal rhythm—how cortisol fluctuates over 24 hours.
You’ll collect four to five dried urine samples at specific times over a 24-hour period, following simple at-home instructions. ConciergeMD provides everything you need and clear guidance to ensure accurate collection.
Anyone experiencing chronic fatigue, burnout, poor sleep, anxiety, mood changes, or difficulty managing stress can benefit from this test. It’s also ideal for patients undergoing hormone therapy or seeking to understand the root cause of low energy.
No fasting is required. However, it’s recommended to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and heavy exercise during collection, as they can alter cortisol levels.
Your adrenal glands regulate stress, energy, and sleep patterns. The DUTCH Adrenal test helps identify whether your cortisol production is balanced or if chronic stress, fatigue, or inflammation may be disrupting your body’s natural rhythm.
Unlike one-time blood or saliva tests, DUTCH Adrenal provides a comprehensive 24-hour profile, showing how cortisol and cortisone rise and fall throughout the day—along with their metabolites—for a more complete picture of adrenal performance.
A flattened cortisol curve may suggest adrenal fatigue or chronic stress. Elevated evening cortisol can indicate poor sleep quality or overactive stress responses. These insights help tailor your treatment plan for better energy and resilience.
Cortisol is the active form of the hormone that helps your body respond to stress. Cortisone is its inactive form. Measuring both helps determine how efficiently your body converts and regulates stress hormones throughout the day.
While “adrenal fatigue” isn’t a recognized medical diagnosis, the DUTCH Adrenal test detects patterns of HPA-axis dysregulation—the hormonal communication network between your brain and adrenal glands—helping identify early stress imbalances.
Yes. Corticosteroids, hormonal medications, and certain supplements can influence cortisol and cortisone levels. Your ConciergeMD provider will guide you on any necessary adjustments before testing.
Results are typically available within 2–3 weeks after the lab receives your samples. Once complete, your ConciergeMD provider will review your personalized report and discuss next steps in your wellness plan.
Typically, cortisol peaks within 30–45 minutes of waking and gradually declines throughout the day, reaching its lowest level at night. Deviations from this rhythm can indicate stress or sleep-related issues.
Yes. Abnormal cortisol patterns—such as high evening cortisol—can interfere with sleep. Identifying these imbalances allows your ConciergeMD provider to recommend targeted interventions to restore natural rhythms and improve rest.
Absolutely. Many patients combine the DUTCH Adrenal with tests like the DUTCH Complete or Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) panel for a fuller view of hormonal, adrenal, and metabolic health.
