How Effective Is Exosome Therapy For Chronic Pain?

If you’ve found yourself among the 25 million Americans with chronic pain, you’ve probably exhausted all methods of treatment. Unfortunately, the best treatment options in the past have been non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen, or powerful opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin. But due to these drugs’ effectiveness and the host of potential side effects, researchers were determined to find a new solution to chronic pain. After some surprising recent studies, exosomes have taken center stage in their search.

First of all, what are exosomes?

Exosomes are messengers that originate within the endosomal compartment of cells that relay reaction messages to other cells in the body. Discovered in 1983, these extracellular messengers were celebrated for their ability to deliver instructions to cells of both the same and different cell types.

A study published by the National Library of Medicine in 2019 found exosome therapy, a “cell-free” alternative to stem-cell therapy that is administered via injection or infusion, to “be a potent alternative for the treatment of chronic pain.”

How do exosomes treat chronic pain?

Exosomes treat pain through their ability to target damaged cells and deliver regenerative instructions. Using nearly 15 billion exosomes per infusion, a single injection or infusion floods the body with these extracellular messengers, releasing a wave of restorative instructions to target areas of inflammation in the body.

This, in turn, stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms, promoting reduced inflammatory and neuropathic pain without the use of pills or prescriptions. A study published in 2020 found that exosome treatment not only led to fewer side effects than traditional pain management methods, but may also lead to long-term immunoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects.
